Fresh Blooms for the Sandbox

Mosaic 1

It has been cool, windy and wet for the most part of the last week.  This weekend saw the sun shining again and today was really nice to be out in the garden or anywhere.    I finally got the planter of sedums out of the garage.  They were stretching for the light but with nightly frosts I was hesitant about putting them out.  The pulsatilla is blooming right along as are the Exotic Emperor tulips.

Mosiac 2

The moss phlox is just so pretty and loaded with blooms.  The yellow daffodils in the front garden just sway with the breeze.  The asparagus is coming up in the side garden.  This is my husband’s favourite and he looks forward to barbequing the tender spears with just a little olive oil.   Unfortunately,  he is not well enough to eat them this year.  I will cook some if he shows me how.   I don’t know about you but I never learned how to cook on the barbeque.  I left that to hubby.    He is a pro at it.  Our boys are also great bbq cooks. I can’t even light it.  I hated asparagus growing up as my Mom cooked it to mush and I used to gag at the table.  Now I love it cooked just tender crisp.

I am joining Mary for Mosaic Monday again.   Have a wonderful week.  The mosaic templates I used this week were from Isobel LaFrance.   Valerie

Hi Val
Do you think spring is here to stay this time? I'm so happy to see things starting to bloom.

Your garden looks so pretty! Nice to have fresh asparagus. Funny, I gagged at them too, but now I love them.

Beautiful blooms! I didn't like asparagus when I was a child, but I LOVE it now!

We're having nightly frosts, too. I had to plant daylilies this morning even so because they weren't doing so well in their dormant state anymore. Hope that you plants thrive and may there be warmer days ahead.

It must be lovely to have your own asparagus growing and I'm sure you'll find a good way to cook them without worrying about the barbeque. Your mosaics are so pretty and just say, "Spring".

Beautiful blooms. I also am learning to appreciate asparagus like you, but had the same childhood experience.

Hi Valerie - so nice to see things in bloom. My garden is a sea of blue with forget-me-nots and grape hyacinths in their glory.

Just planted some asparagus crowns - I know it will be 2-3 years before I get any, but I can't wait. As far as grilling them - just break off the bottoms like usual, toss them in a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper. Throw them on the grill for 4 or 5 minutes, move them around so they don't scorch. I serve it with a few shavings of parmesan cheese. One of our favorite ways to eat asparagus!!

Take care of yourself as you are taking care of hubby.

Your mosaics are always lovely, Valerie!

I hope your husband will be well by next spring to enjoy the new asparagus crop.

I do know what you mean when you said your Mom overcooked it when you were young -- so did my Mom! I like to roast it in a hot oven or steam it slightly so it stays crisp and green.

I also hated asparagus as a child, but now I enjoy it roasted in the oven, or on the grill. I'm sorry your husband isn't feeling well these days. Hope the treatments are going well.

I'd like to know how to barbecue asparagus too. Most of the time I heat some olive oil and dollop of butter and quickly saute the spears with a little garlic - sometimes I'll add some green beans too, just because I like all that crunchy green!

Ooooo, that asparagus looks wonderful.
After years of trying (sort of halfheartedly) I finally learned how to light a barbecue grill a couple of years ago. Actually the lighting was easy. Keeping it lit? another story altogether. :-(

Hoping You Have a Blessed Easter
